Speaking

When I first learned to speak in the business community it was not on purpose. My mentor took me to a Lions Club in Walnut Creek and just before they finished eating, Ed leaned over and whispered “Be the way you’re their speaker today.”

I had two choices, get up and run out of the room or get up and face my fear. Ed had been telling me I had to start speaking for more than a year.

So I got up and spoke for 20 minutes. I have no idea what I said, but he members were very kind and they actually applauded when I was finished. Every month Ed would make an appointment at various service organizations and pick me up to make sure I would show up. About one year into this routine a young woman came up to me after I spoke and told me she had heard me six months previously and what I had said saved her business.

It was all I needed to hear. I felt like I was making a difference. I had validation my knowledge had value to others when before I thought my knowledge was known to everyone.
